This route begins its narrative in the lands of Penamacor, 400 million years ago, when the Super Continent Pangea placed the land that we walk on today slightly under water, and allows us to observe part of the life of that time through the fossilized marks of the seabed as well as the beings that moved there. We continue to evolve through the landscape until medieval times, stepping on the Templar territory of Penha Garcia, important in retaining the Moors further and further south. We continue our way towards “Monte Santo”, understanding the Inselberg of Monsanto and the importance of these natural structures in the establishment of human settlements.

On the way, we cross pleasant trails and we also have the opportunity to visit the castle that never was, in Vila de Touro.

Home of countless stories and legends, it allows for a calm ascent, rich for the imagination. On the way back, we pass by another place equally rich in legends, mysteries and worship: Nossa Senhora da Póvoa, which hosts the largest pilgrimage in the Region since the early years of the Kingdom of Portugal. Come and understand our fascination with Serra d'Opa!

The Millers’ Path

In the past, the Malcata Mountains housed, on the banks of its streams, several stone mills that milled the wheat and rye of the people who lived there, either for their own consumption or for sale. It was precisely for sale that the millers moved in donkey carts or in ox carts, from their mills to the village of Penamacor, where they sought trade. In this walk we recover one of the routes, which takes us from the village of Penamacor to a mill on the banks of Ribeira da Baságueda, inside the Malcata Mountains Nature Reserve, where we can learn a little more about its history and delight ourselves with a rural snack. The return will be by car at our expense.
